Whether you are coming to Dubai on an important business trip or you are looking to fully enjoy an exquisite vacation in one of the most luxurious and abundant places in the world, you will want to rent a luxury car that expresses your good taste in fine automobiles. For that, you will need to get a driving license in Dubai or convert your foreign license to match United Arab Emirates standards.

How to apply for a driving license in Dubai

If you do not have a driving license in Dubai, you can only apply for one if you are a resident of the UAE, with a residence visa issued in Dubai and you are at least 18 years old.

In order to apply for a driving license and undergo training at an authorized driving school in Dubai, you will need to submit the following documents:
  • original and copy of your passport with a residence stamp and a valid visa;
  • no objection certificate from your employer;
  • eight photographs;
  • recent eye test results.
The first step that you need to take in order to apply for a Dubai driving license is to get an eye test done at an optician. The application form for your license must be typed in Arabic and submitted to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), after which you will receive a temporary driving license that you must carry with you during the whole time you are undergoing training.

The training for your Dubai driving license consists in a few tests: parking and garage tests, theory tests (35 questions on road signals, guidelines and hazards) and the final one - the road test during which you will have a few minutes to demonstrate your aptitudes. After you pass all the tests, you can obtain your driving license within a few minutes.

If you are a UAE resident and you already have a license issued in your mother country, you can convert it into a Dubai driving license.

Driving license in Dubai and rental cars

Renting a car in Dubai is the best way of transportation since the city is specially designed for traveling by car. If you are an expat looking to rent a luxury car, you can use your GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) driving license. If you are from another country than those in GCC, you will need to obtain an international driving permit (IDP), issued by the country in which your license was released.

People who visit the UAE are not allowed to drive a private vehicle; they can only drive rental cars with a proper license and insurance. Visitors can apply for a temporary driver’s license that is valid for six months. The temporary driving license can be released as soon as the same day in exchange for a small fee.
